Palm Sunday (April 5th) is the first day of Holy Week.
On this day we remember Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. He rode a donkey because there were prophecies in the Old Testament about the King coming in humble appearance, riding on a donkey. Many people welcomed Jesus by shouting 'Hosanna!', waving palm branches, and making a path of branches and garments. They hoped that Jesus was the promised Saviour. At Mass we hear a long reading about the Last Supper and Jesus’ Passion. On Palm Sunday the priest blesses palm and distributes the palm to the congregation for their homes. Left over palm is burnt and used on Ash Wednesday the following year.
