The Alive-O Programme

Overview of the Alive-O Programme

"The Glory of God is people fully alive."

The current National Catechetical Programme is the Alive-O series.  The title of the Alive-O series is inspired by a phrase of Saint Irenaeus of Lyons- ‘Gloria Dei vivens homo’, meaning ‘The glory of God is people fully alive’.  This title reflects one of the overriding aims of religious education, ‘to enable people to become fully alive to the presence of God in themselves, in others, in the Church and in the world around them.’  Such a title resonates with the Gospel words of Jesus ‘I have come that you may have life and have it to the full’.  (John 10:10)  This title is both biblical and anthropological and merges the teaching of the Gospel with the experience of the child.

The Alive-O programme attempts to help children to relate their discovery of themselves, other people and the world to God who is the creator of all things, the source of all life, who loves and cares for each of them and is always with them.  The primary classroom provides a positive environment for such a dialogue to take place between the experience or culture of the child and Gospel teaching.
