The Safeguarding and Child Protection Service promotes the safe care of children involved in Church activities throughout the Diocese.  It does this through:

  • Providing training for priests and parish workers in safeguarding and child protection
  • Working collaboratively with statutory agencies to ensure that all complaints and concerns are responded to appropriately
  • Providing support and counselling to persons who have experienced abuse

The Limerick Diocesan Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and Procedures comply with the requirements of Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland (2008) as updated. The Diocesan Child Safeguarding Policy was published in 2009 and is available for download from our Policy Documents section here.

The Diocesan Safeguarding Policy is reviewed annually and will be expanded and revised in accordance with best practice as determined by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland.

Limerick Diocese has had a Designated Person in place since 1996 whose role is to receive all child protection complaints. This position has been held by lay people since 2008. In 2011 the Diocese appointed its first Director of Safeguarding Children, Ger Crowley, whose role incorporates that of Designated Person, to oversee all aspects of child protection in Church related activities throughout the Diocese.

The Diocese has two Safeguarding Children Committees; the Case Management Advisory Panel chaired by retired Chief Supt. Gerry Mahon and the Safeguarding Children Committee, chaired by Catherine Kelly, Director of Limerick Youth Service.
