28 th Sunday - Year B
S: Good morning - today we’re on about wealth and money and while all of us know that money does matter - it’s not the be all and end all of life.
B: Some might say that depends on your bank balance … anyway our word of life for today comes from Mark’s Gospel “Go and sell everything own and give the money to the poor”. These were the words spoken by Jesus to the rich young man who kept all the rules but wanted to do more, but he couldn’t cope with this request from Jesus because he had so much - Jesus loved him but unfortunately he had become a slave to his money.
S: The love of money can certainly be the root of all evil - just think of any corruption scandals - the desire for more and more wealth is at the heart of it all. But then again none of us are perfect, and how about putting ourselves in the shoes of the rich young man - what would Jesus ask us to give up? Letting go of what we desire is very difficult and yet we know that to follow Jesus we gain everything.
B: Our reflection this morning is an extract from Psalm 32
May we know the shortness of this life in comparison with eternity.
May God’s pity be a healing balm to our anger.
May each morning begin with the celebration of God’s love.
May our joy in the Lord overcome all feelings of affliction and misfortune.
May our eyes be open to God’s handiwork all around us.
May God’s glory shine on us, his favour support us
And his blessing, bring success to the work of our hands.
Nothing is truly rich unless it leads to God.
S: Before we go this morning, we just like to remind you that the Limerick Gospel Choir is recruiting new members. They practice every Tuesday evening at 8 o’ clock in St. Michel’s Church on Denmark Street. You have to be over 18 years of age to join. Why not go along and try it out, sounds like it could be a bit of fun and a great way to meet new people.
B: You’ve been listening to “Just a thought” with Brenda Cribbin...
S: and Seamus Madigan. We can be contacted through the Limerick Diocesan Offices at Henry Street. You can also download your own copy of this reflection by clicking on limerickdiocese.org
B: We look forward to your company again next week, so take care...
S & B: Bye
