2 nd SUNDAY - YEAR A

16 th January 2005

S: Good Morning. Today we are on about signposts – yes, those things you find, especially in our countryside, turned the wrong way round – Signposts – Those pointers which are all going metric in a few days time.

B: Isn’t it strange how the change to the metric system in the next few days makes us realize how important signposts are in all our lives. John the Baptist said “Look there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world”. Now if that’s not someone being a signpost I don’t know what is. John the Baptist is pointing the way towards Jesus and that’s one of the lovely things about John the Baptist – he’s the most selfless character in scripture – always pointing the way towards Jesus.

S: Just as we have signposts that point towards Jesus, I’m certain there are also plenty which point away from him. I’ll tell you there are times when we really need those signposts, pointing in the direction of Jesus, especially when we’re in a lonely place and not sure of our way – A misdirecting signpost can wreak havoc in our lives. So we thank God this morning for all those good people, who for us, have been signposts for God.

B: Yes, there are plenty of people who have provided good direction for us. People such as our parents, families, good friends and teachers & today we give thanks for them

Seamus has a reflection for us called “The way before me”.

S: I know not the way before me

But Jesus will guide me still

And so, in his mercy trusting

I patiently wait his will.

I know not the cares or sorrows

That into my life may fall

But Jesus, my loving saviour

Will give me the grace for all.

I know not the way before me,

But Jesus my Lord is near

To shelter, protect and keep me,

Then why should I doubt or fear?

I know not the way before me,

But this to my soul is given –

The promise of life eternal,

A home and a rest in heaven.

B: Just before we go I would like to let you know that the annual week of prayer for Church Unity begins this Tuesday 18 th January. The theme for this year is: “Christ, the one foundation of the Church”. An ecumenical Prayer Service will take place next Sunday in St. Mary’s Cathedral at 8pm and all are welcome.
