Mary, Mother of God, Year B
S: Good morning – and a very happy New Year to you all
B: On this New Years Day we keep the feast of Mary, Mother of God. Mary holds a very special place in the Christian tradition and today we read in the Gospel of Luke that following all the unusual happenings in Bethlehem “she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart”.
S: You know Brenda, I guess we all could do with taking a leaf from Mary’s book. Mary who was open to the spirit of God in her life, even though she may not have not have fully understood what was going on. Mary who was willing to say yes to the invitation to be the mother of Jesus, the mother of God.
B: Yes, and we thought a little reflection on family would be appropriate given the day that’s in it.
S: On this day, the living out
of the Christmas message truly begins.
Now it is our time - as a family -
to let people know that Jesus is among us.
The song of the angels will soon be over,
and the shepherds will go back to their flocks.
It will then be our time to go
to our schools and our workplaces,
carrying the story of the coming of our God.
It will be our time to follow the star
that leads to Jesus, the Christ,
and to point the way for others:
our relatives, friends, neighbours,
and everyone we meet.
Above all, it will be our time - as a family -
to follow Jesus by feeding the hungry,
clothing the naked, visiting the sick and the sad,
offering words of peace and joy,
and loving one another as Jesus has loved us.
Christmas reminds us that God has given us a great task.
Christmas reminds us - as a family - to carry the joy of Christ
into our world today and all year long.
