16 th October 2005 – 29 th Sunday, Year A
Mission Sunday
S: Good morning, today is Mission Sunday; a day is which we remember people working on the missions and especially our own Irish People working abroad.
B: Our word of life for today comes from Luke’s Gospel “Launch out into the deep”. Launching out into the deep can be daunting and has even cost some people their lives. Missionary work is indeed difficult and while the numbers of Irish missionaries seems to be decreasing, worldwide the numbers are increasing – the need is as great as ever. This morning I think in a special way of my own uncle Fr. John Cribbin who is working as a missionary priest in Brazil. Hello Fr. John!
S: Mission Sunday is the day when we look beyond our shores and support the missions. Your prayer is important as is your contribution. The mission Sunday Collection which is being taken up at Masses today is sent in its entirety to a Missionary Church – so no administration costs are taken out.
B: Our Reflection this morning is one you might recognise, because we have used it before – but it does tie in nicely with today’s theme, its called Disturb us O Lord.
Disturb us O Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves
When our dreams come true, because we dreamed too little.
When we have arrived in safety, because we sailed too close to the shore.
Stir us O Lord to dare more boldly, to venture more seas
Where storms shall show your mastery
Where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars
In the name of him who pushed back the horizons of our hopes
And invited the brave to follow him Amen.
S: Before we go, I would like to let you know about three workshops starting tomorrow based on the pastoral by Bishop Donal Murray called “Thirsting for God”. This pastoral is a reflection on the Eucharist. The purpose of these workshops is to respond and reflect on this pastoral as we come to the end of ‘The Year of the Eucharist’. All three workshops take place in the Woodlands House Hotel in Adare and all are at 8pm.
The first one is tomorrow night
The second on is on the following Monday 24 th October
The final workshop takes place on Monday 7 th November.
Everyone is welcome to attend one of these workshops.
