27 th Sunday, Year A
S: Good morning, today we’re on about how important it is to care for the environment and how we need to see ourselves as tenants rather than landlords of the earth.
B: Our word of Life For Today comes from the Gospel of John – I choose you from the world to go out and bear fruit, fruit that will last. These days you hear a lot about caring for the environment and how important it is to reduce, re-use and re-cycle. This concern comes from destroying the earth or from a spiritual place where we see the importance of leaving the earth as good as we got it.
S: Again this reminds me of the poster of the native American girl holding a sunflower and the caption of the poster reads “we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”, how true this is, that we only have this earth on loan, and we must try each day to leave it a little better than we found it.
B: Next Tuesday is the feast of St Francis of Assisi, the Patron St of the Environment, so maybe this week you might try to make a commitment to recycle some waste products from your house and keep your surroundings free to litter
S: Our Reflection today is a prayer for the Environment based on the words of St Francis and Psalm 148
Be praised, my Lord,
Through our Sister Mother Earth,
Who feeds us and rules us
And produces all sorts of fruits
With many-coloured flowers and herbs
Praise the Lord, O Heavens!
Praise him from the skies!
Praise him, sun and moon,
And all you twinkling stars.
Let everything he has made
Give praise to him. Amen
B: Before we go this morning we’d like to make you aware of the heritage site of the Limerick Diocese on the diocesan web-pages. This is an exceptionally well-put together record of the history and people of the Diocese of Limerick. You’d never know what you might learn about the origins and heritage of your own parish. The site is at www.limerickdioceseheritage.org
S: Now, on next Tuesday, 4 th October, an information evening takes place at the Limerick Diocesan Pastoral Centre on a ‘suicide healing bereavement programme’ which is about to begin. The programme is to help people effected by suicide and will run from Wednesday 12 th October to 7 th December. You can contact the Pastoral Centre on 061 400133 for further details.
B: You’ve been listening to Just a thought with Brenda Cribbin
S: and Seamus Madigan. We can be contacted through the Limerick Diocesan Offices at 66 O’ Connell Street or by e-mailing smadigan@limerickdiocese.org. If you would like your own copy of this reflection you can download it by clicking on limerickdiocese.org
B: We look forward to your company again next week, so in the meantime - take care…..
S& B: Byeeeeee……
