16th Sunday - Year A
17th July 2005

S: Good morning! Today we’re on the topic of Love and Marriage ....

B: Isn’t there a song which say: ‘it goes together like a Horse and Carriage...’

S: Please Brenda, now be serious. It is that time of year though isn’t it, for weddings? I’m sure a lot of you listening will have been to a wedding or are planning to go to one this summer.

B: mmm I love weddings, its great to meet friends at a happy occasion when everyone is in good form and looking their best. So anyway, on to our Word of Life for today which comes from the 1st letter of St John “Let us love one another, since love comes from God”.
The word ‘Love’ is mentioned on countless occasions throughout the New Testament - all the time it’s asking us to think of others before we think of ourselves.

S: I was in a Card Shop the other day, looking at wedding cards and one I came across had the 10 rules for a happy marriage...
The first one was ...

1. Never be angry at the same time.
B: 2. Never yell at each other unless the house is on fire.
S: 3. If one of you has to win an argument let it be the other one.
B: 4. If you have to criticise do it lovingly.
S: 5. Never bring up mistakes of the past.
B: 6. Remember that compromise is better than conflict.
S: 7. Never go to sleep with an argument unsettled.
B: 8. When you have done something wrong, be ready to admit it and
ask for forgiveness.
S: 9. At least once every day, try to say one kind complimentary thing to your partner.
B: 10. Neglect the whole world rather than one another.

So there you have it - 10 rules for a happy marriage.

S: One of the items I love to look at each day in the papers is the “Love is.” cartoons at the back. You know they contain a real treasure of wisdom.

B: Yeah, they’re good alright - simple but true.
Today I have a short reflection for those of you who are married or planning to get married.....

Marriage is.......
Someone to believe in and to put their trust in you.
Someone who appreciates the special things that you do.
Someone to be close to in your heart and in your mind.
Someone who’s the love you might have thought you’d never find.
Someone who stands by you and whose faith can make you strong.
Someone you will cherish every day your whole life long.

S: You’ve been listening to "Just a thought" with Seamus Madigan..

B: and Brenda Cribbin. We can be contacted by e-mail on smadigan@limerickdiocese.org. If you would like your own copy of this reflection you can download it by clicking on www.limerickdiocese.org
