Pentecost Sunday – Year A

15 th May 2005

S: Good Morning. Today is Pentecost Sunday, a Day in which we celebrate the Spirit of God in our lives.

B: Our Word of Life for today comes from John’s Gospel -

“Receive the Holy Spirit”

These words were spoken by Jesus to the disciples who were living in fear, had locked themselves behind closed doors, were terrified for their lives and what lay outside.

The Spirit of God changed everything. The doors opened and the disciples became people of Courage.

S: I guess they stopped looking back at Calvary and wondering where it had all gone wrong, and with the Spirit, they gained the courage and confidence to move forward. The closed doors were no longer an obstacle. The Spirit gives us life and frees us from closed doors that imprison us and our reflection this morning has to do with doors being kept closed because of fear.

B: Doors at which to knock,

doors, through which I was called in,

doors before which I have waited

doors before which I have waited through the night

S: doors which were by chance closed

doors which remained shut deliberately

doors which have never opened again

door through which I entered only once

B: doors of which I lost the keys

doors, before which I stood tense

doors before which I trembled with fear

doors beyond which something happy awaited me

S: doors beyond which something hard awaited me

doors closing people in

doors keeping others out

doors which led upwards and downwards

B: doors which I could have smashed

doors beyond which waited suffering and death

doors on which fate depended

doors which slammed shut behind me

S: doors beyond which was more than I longed for

doors beyond which was nothing

doors,

doors,

doors,

Have courage and open these closed doors.

Open the doors to Christ.

B: Before we go this morning we would like to congratulate all the young people who have received their confirmation this year. The spirit of God gives us the courage to be brave – we pray that you may be brave and continue to speak up for what is good and what is right especially in school and at home.

S: You have been listening to Just a Thought with Seamus Madigan
