Feast of the Ascension of the Lord– Year A
8 th May 2005
S: Good Morning. Today we keep the Feast of the Ascension where Jesus returns to his Father in heaven.
B: This feast is really a celebration that Jesus is present both in heaven and on earth and in our Word of Life today John reiterates this:
Know that I am with you always - yes, until the end of time.
These lines are a comfort, aren’t they - Jesus has promised to be with us always.
S: You think of great Christian people down through the Centuries - haven’t they really had a tremendous belief in this promise that Jesus is with them.
You think of people like Maximilian Kolbe, a Franciscan Priest who died in the Concentration Camps in Auschwitz. He seemed to have no fear of dying because he had great hope and this came from his belief that Jesus would be with him always.
You think of Pope Benedict XVI who expressed similar sentiments at his inauguration when he said: “I am not alone. I do not have to carry alone what in truth I could never carry alone. All the Saints of God are there to protect me, to sustain me and to carry me. And your prayers, my dear friends, your understanding, your love, your faith and your hope accompany me.”
B: And down through the years we’ve had tremendous examples of men and women who have given their life for what they believed in. Isn’t it interesting to note that we’ve had more martyrs in the 20 th Century than in any other Century since the time of Jesus. So, people continue to take comfort in the fact that Jesus is with them always.
S: This morning our reflection is called “Your Constant Companion”
Pray without ceasing
God hears what you say
From the moment you rise
To the close of the Day
Don’t think for a moment
That he turns a deaf ear
Trust and have faith
And you’ll never know fear.
B: You have been listening to Just a Thought with Brenda Cribbin
S: and Seamus Madigan. We can be contacted through the Limerick Diocesan Offices at 66 O’Connell Street. If you would like a copy of this reflection you can download it by clicking on www.limerickdiocese.org
B: We look forward to your company again next week, in the meantime, take care.
