MISSION SUNDAY
D: Good morning. This weekend we celebrate Mission Sunday and we give thanks to God for all those wonderful people who, through the years have shared their faith especially through the missions.
B: The word ‘mission’ is a curious word isn’t it? Even in ordinary conversation we talk about a woman or a man ‘with a mission’ indicating someone who has a strong single-minded commitment to some worthwhile project. So many places of work display their ‘mission statement’ advertising their commitment to quality of service.
D: Mission in the Christian context is that spark that flame of faith that impels the brave to make huge sacrifices,to leave home and everything familiar so as to share love’s message . Ordinary people, prepared to lead extraordinary lives. We thank God for their witness , may they inspire us that we might:
- Accept the message of Christ in its fullness
- Joyfully proclaim and live this our faith
- Realise the importance of prayer in our lives
- Be grateful for the gifts we have received
- Share with those who are poor
- Relate with openess and respect with the followers of other religions.
B: Young people today are impressed with people who volunteer to go on the missions. They are impressed by people who stand up for what they believe in – people who are prepared to share their faith. We all know of people from our diocese here in Limerick who share their faith in many parts of the world. The following reflection is dedicated to them.
Father in Heaven,
Your name be known and praised in every culture;
Your kingdom of truth and life, justice and peace,
Love and forgiveness – be established in every land.
Your people everywhere be given their daily bread and
Your beautiful and life-giving creation be respected.
Amen.
D: In a special way we remember this mission Sunday, Fr.david costelloe and derrick Leonard,Priests in this Dioceseon the missions in Lima , Peru.
B: We also remember my Uncle Fr.John Cribbin who has served the people of Brazil for over forty years on the missions in Rio de Janerio.
D: You’ve been listening to ‘Just a thought’ with David Bracken
