Fifth Sunday - Year C

S: Good morning - a number of years ago I was asked to take on a job, & I had the misfortune to say to a group of friends how unworthy I felt of the task ahead. It was a misfortune because for the next few years they never stopped reminding me of how unworthy I was of the job.

B: And that’s what we’re on about today - how unworthy we can feel in different situations. Like in today’s Gospel from Luke where Simon Peter says to Jesus “leave me alone - I’m a sinful man”. and our word of life for today is Jesus’ response to him “Do not be afraid”. I suppose fear can cause us to feel unworthy but this human weakness does not have to be an obstacle because God can work through it.

S: You know, Brenda, all the disciples were kind of surprising choices - surprising because they all had their faults, some of them major, and yet Jesus didn’t choose them for their perfection, it was their generosity that was most important. I guess all of us could go around saying “Lord, I’m not worthy” and do nothing - but we’ve got to concentrate on what we can do and live in the present.

B: Our reflection this morning concentrates on living for the moment.

Each moment is precious. Worrying about the past,

we get depressed.

Thinking about the future makes us anxious.

Living in the moment, one gains acceptance and in turn peace.

If you just be, you will do and then you will have.

Being in the moment, you can sort out problems

and find a solution.

Living in the now, one finds wisdom which helps one

come to terms with life.

Live for now and be true to yourself and you will come to know yourself completely.

In knowing yourself completely you are free,

and this is what each precious moment is all about.

S: Just before we go I would like to let you know about two evenings of reflection that are being organised by the Diocesan Pastoral Centre.
