New Organ Tuition Course 2018

Diocese of Limerick in association with the National Liturgy Centre

are delighted to offer a new Organ Tuition for Liturgy Course 2018

Bishop Leahy has welcomed the invitation from the National Liturgy Centre to offer an NLC-accredited organ tuition here in Limerick diocese, starting this March.

The course: The Organ Tuition for Liturgy programme is a transition course from piano/keyboard to organ. It provides an opportunity for those who have basic keyboard skills (grade 4/5) to be introduced into the role of church organist, playing a two manual organ (either pipe or pedal) with full pedal board. The certificates offered to participants will have three levels: foundation, senior level and advanced.

The content: The course consists of 20 sessions of organ tuition, 4 hours of liturgical formation and an NLC exam. Organ tuition will be offered as a series of weekly group classes (1 ½ hours per class, with 2-5 participants), and a one day liturgy formation class would be offered at a midway point.

Bernadette Kiely is our Organ Tutor. Bernadette holds qualifications in organ teaching and performance in addition to piano teaching qualifications.  She has many years of experience in teaching both instruments and formerly held the positions of Head of Piano, Head of Organ and Head of Examinations in Limerick School of Music.  She is currently registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland and is Organist and Choir Director at St John’s Cathedral.  As a former member of the Advisory Committee on Church Music based in the National Centre for Liturgy (Maynooth) she has contributed to the development of this training course for liturgical organists.

Columba McCann is our tutor for the Liturgical Formation section of the course. Columba McCann OSB is a monk in Glenstal Abbey. He has studied at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome, and lectured in liturgical studies in Holy Cross College and the National Centre for Liturgy. He is a former chairman of the Dublin Diocesan Liturgical Commission.

The cost: €750 per annum includes all course tuition and exams. This would not include participants’ costs in purchasing books or other materials, and in practise time.

When & where: The course will run over two 10 week semesters before and after the summer. It is envisaged that organ tuition will be held in St John’s Cathedral on a weekday afternoon, though the class times may be amended to better suit participants after the first class gathering, on Wed March 7th .

Application and requirements: The application form should be completed and returned before Friday, March 2nd, and a follow up phone call will take place with each applicant before the first class. Participants must have access to a two manual organ (either pipe or pedal) with full pedal board, on which to practise for the duration of the course – we may be able to assist with such access if requested. Contact details are on the application form.
