World Youth Day 2016

World Youth Day (WYD) is a massive international event, organised by the Catholic Church, regularly attracting more than a million people from all around the world. It brings together young Catholics, as well as those from other denominations, in a celebration of faith. It is celebrated every three years and is presided over by the Holy Father.

The genesis of WYD can be found in 1984 when, on Palm Sunday of that year, Pope John Paul II invited the youth to celebrate with him the Year of Redemption. Young people responded with enthusiasm and excitement. Later, in 1985, the Pope wrote a letter to young people from around the world; from this, the adventure of World Youth Day was launched.

These adventures are intended to encourage the participation of young people in the Church; to share and to celebrate their faith; and meditate on the message that the Pope chooses for each pilgrimage. Participation requires lots of energy and an open heart to the wonders that God has in store for everyone who participates. There is catechesis, testimonies, sharing, examples of love to our neighbours and the Church, music festivals and cultural activities.

World Youth Day a unique experience and one which is unmatched in terms of scale, universality and joyfulness. It is a life-changing event - we hope you join us!
