Pentecost Sunday - Year C

S: Good morning - today is Pentecost Sunday a day in which we celebrate the great gift that the Holy Spirit is to us. We celebrate the Spirit of God who is the lifeblood of our Christian life.

B: Our word of life for today comes from John’s Gospel where Jesus says, “the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name will teach you everything”. The Holy Spirit gives energy to our faith and teaches us to be courageous – it is the power of God all around us.

S: Writers, down through the years, have used different words to describe the Holy Spirit, like fire, wind and breath and if you like, each of these hint at unpredictability – like the wind blows wherever it wills and I guess we would sometimes be happier if this weren’t so, we could keep the fire of the Spirit as a gentle log cracking in a winter fire place – but the Spirit will not be contained and “come Holy Spirit”, is a dangerous prayer if we’re not prepared for the consequences, however I have found myself that a prayer to the Holy Spirit, in difficult times can be a very powerful prayer.

B: At this stage, most of the Confirmations are over and we’d like to congratulate all the boys and girls who were confirmed over the past few months, may the gifts of the Holy Spirit help you along life’s journey.

S: Our reflections this morning is a Prayer for Pentecost.

Father, in these days of Pentecost,

send your Holy Spirit upon us,

to renew in our lives the gifts we have received

in Baptism and Confirmation.

We ask you to help us to live like Jesus.

May your Spirit restore in us all that needs to know

the touch of your healing love.

Heal us in mind and body.

Bless our home.

Restore our marriages, our families and our communities.

We ask you to help us to live like Jesus.

B: Guide by your grace the nations of Europe and the World.

Open our eyes to the wonder of your creation;

may we treat it with reverence.

We ask you to help us to live like Jesus.

May your Spirit guide all Christians into unity,

that all may come to know your love.

May the prayers of Mary, who joined the disciples in prayer awaiting the coming of the Spirit,

help us now; with one voice as we pray:

Send us your Spirit and help us to live like Jesus.
