First Sunday of Lent - Year C
S: Good morning - today is the 1st Sunday of Lent and we’re on about how sometimes we can be lost in the wilderness - we can experience a loss of direction, a loss of answers and a loss of guidance - and this is a time when we take out the maps and look for the signs back towards God.
B: Our word of life for today comes from Luke’s Gospel “man does not live on bread alone” - these words were spoken by Jesus when he spent 40 days in the desert - and during this 40 days of Lent we might think about the things we need in our lives and not the things we think we need and remember the things that are most important like family, faith and goodness.
S: We do play subtle games, don’t we, to deceive ourselves and I know it myself - I mean I can sometimes think “I deserve as much money as they have, for my lifestyle” - once known as greed, I’m the boss, I can do what I like” - also called abuse of power, “I have worked hard for this, I deserve all the praise” - once know as pride. We sometimes do get our priorities mixed up and Lent is a time to sort things out.
B: Isn’t it true that we are slow to keep up to date with our reflection? And isn’t it also true that for many of us, faith learning stopped after Confirmation? - We live in an age of upgrades - Computers, Mobile phones even our homes - but we can sometimes leave our faith behind and forget to refresh or upgrade that, perhaps this lent might give us an opportunity for a Faith upgrade.
S: And speaking of a faith upgrade – what about taking a look at Bishop Murray’s Lenten Pastoral for 2007. In it he urges us to take a new look at the society in which we live - and want to live. He reflects on how Christianity needs to be counter-cultural in our modern western world. The Pastoral is called “NEVER ALONE – it is divided into two sections: Strangers in a strange land and Building the counter culture. It will be available soon from the Priests in your parish or the full text can be read on the Diocesan Website at www.limerickdiocese.org
B: Our reflection this morning is called Refresh your Spirit
Take time out of your busy day to find a quiet place –
Slip away, renew your spirit, and seek His holy face.
Humble your spirit, wait to hear the whisperings of His Heart –
Send up praises and soon you’ll find the joy He will impart
Then go back to your work refreshed, the day will seem brand new –
For the love you give your Saviour, He will give back to you.
